Mies van der Rohe Appreciation Club: Constitution

Mission

The Mies van der Rohe Appreciation Club is a student organization dedicated to raising awareness of high-quality architecture, craft, and design and the labor that creates it.

Our aim is to advocate for conditions that enable the production of high-quality art, architecture, and education.

Structure and Procedures

The Mies van der Rohe Appreciation Club is lead by a single, elected Director. The Director of the Mies van der Rohe Appreciation Club is tasked with facilitating the daily operations and overarching mission of the club. The Director serves a one-year term.

The Director may appoint any member of the Mies van der Rohe Appreciation Club to the position of Assistant Director to help with any of the operations of the club, including preparing meetings and activities, outreach and social media, finances and fundraising, defining membership, etc. Assistant Directors may hold multiple roles.

Membership is defined by participation in at least one event, meeting, or activity; and optional yearly dues of at least $2.00. The yearly dues rate may be set by the Director. Non-members may participate in any activity, but may not vote or sign petitions related to the operations of the club. Yearly dues may be gifted to a member either through the operating budget of the club, or through direct donation by another indvidual.

Either the Director or Assistant Director may have their decisions overturned via petition signed by a simple majority of members. The petition must include an alternative to the decision to be implemented instead. A simple majority of members may make any decision about the operations of the club typically made by the director.

Elections for the position of Director occur at an all-member meeting held in March. Any member may be nominated for the position in the meeting. Elections are held via an approval voting system, where members cast their vote for any candidates they approve of, and the candidate with the most votes wins. The nomination and election process shall all take place in the meeting.

Should the operating budget of the club exceed a ratio of $100:1 member for more than 8 weeks, the Director must (with the assistance of any appointed or existing Assistant Director) develop an endowment fund; spend down the ratio through events, activities, or gifted memberships; or directly issue a dividend to all current members.

Any member who, for any reason, can no longer participate in the club may be refunded their prorated yearly dues. The Director may issue a dues refund at the request of a member. Members with a refund may not participate in future club events without paying a one-time fee of at least $2.00 (set by the Director).
